Daikin air source heat pump in a 1920 - 1944 property

Stuart

I had some experience of living with an Air Source Heat Pump before I got mine, as my parents had one installed a few years ago. However, a lot of people don't have this opportunity, and it is different to living with a combi boiler.

EPC rating: C75 - Before the ASHP install

Installing the system

The whole install took about 4.5 days end to end, from delivery first thing on the Monday morning, through to final documents being signed and handover completed  around Friday lunch.

The installation team I had here from Octopus were great. The first thing they did when they got here on the Monday morning, was to lay down some roll and stroll to protect the floors and carpets. They were friendly and approachable, and would always ask for my opinion or preference if there was more than one way of doing things. They kept the area nice and tidy, cleaned up after themselves, gave me an update at the end of each day and probably left the house cleaner at the end of the week, than it was when they arrived at the start of it lol.

I made no changes before they arrived other than ensuring that they had access to everywhere they needed to, and that things like sofa's weren't in front of radiators that they needed to get at to change, etc. As part of the install, 5 radiators were changed  for newer, bigger ones, and another 1 was added to a room that didn't have one in it before.

Living with a heat pump

Since the ASHP was installed (the week before Christmas 2024), the house has been lovely and warm. I've spent some time getting to know the system (every system is slightly different) and tuning some of the settings to fit my property a bit better. I think I'm pretty much there with all the major changes now, it's just going to be little tweaks here and there as the outside temperature changes.

The biggest change has been learning to live with a hot water tank again, as I'd gotten used to how "instant" a combi boiler could be. However, with a little thought going into the schedule to keep the hot water tank hot, it's been absolutely fine and I haven't run out of hot water yet :-)

Accessing the venue

The Hot Water Cylinder and Main Controller are upstairs on the 1st floor. Don't worry, there's no need to climb around in the loft though, as there's only a few cables up there. Regular on-street parking is available.
