Daikin air source heat pump in a post 2003 property
Russell
I'm very keen to adopt new technologies to support the environment. Heating your home via a heat pump emits much less CO2 than a gas boiler (I'd estimate approx 15% with today's electricity generation mix). This is due to two factors... firstly heat pumps use approx a third of energy compared to gas... Secondly, electricity generation per kwh emits less CO2 than gas (for the majority of the time). I'm opening my home to visitors to hopefully help the adoption to heat pumps, and I'm happy to discuss the pros and cons.

Installing the system
The main change to house compared to our gas boiler is the run of pipes from the heat exchanger to the hot water tank, as can be seen in one of the photos.
We also needed about half our radiators to be replaced (as you need a greater surface area since the temperature of the radiators is much lower).
We have gained a cupboard in the kitchen where the gas boiler used to be, and the heat exchanger sits outside.
Living with a heat pump
We keep the house at a constant temperature, which makes the house really comfortable.
There is no noisy boiler in our kitchen also!
The heat exchanger (outside) makes some noise (a low wirring sound) but where it is positioned very good. Our neighbour hasn't complained once about the fan noise (it's not silent, but not loud either!! And the pitch is low, so the sound of it doesn't travel too far). Note: the heat exchanger is noisier in the winter when no one is outside, and it will not run much in the summer when people will be outside... So all good!!
