Ground source heat pump

Cost of energy bills per year: £600

Installing the system

The property is a 1970s bungalow that has over several years been well insulated.

Living with a heat pump

I was an early adopter of heat pumps some sixteen years ago. at that time my only option was an air source heat pump (ASHP) which had heated the bungalow well. However, we have now installed a ground source heat pump (GSHP) so we have had experience with both. With the GSHP we have seen some improvement in the energy consumption over the ASHP. However, the ASHP was scheduled to turn off between 8am and 4pm whereas we keep the GSHP running all day, just dropping the temperature slightly during the working hours and at night. This might account for the smaller saving on energy consumption between the ASHP and GSHP but our home is now warmer throughout the day. Heat pumps are more efficient if homes are held at a relatively steady temperature instead of making them work hard to accommodate large fluctuations in temperature.
