Daikin air source heat pump in a pre 1920 property

Mark

All electric now and are pleased with the transition due to lower heating costs, stable temperature, reconfigured utility room. We are happy to share our experience It makes sense from a financial standpoint, as well as for comfort and it is good to know we are not as polluting as before. The move to electric is a significant shift in thinking. The units of measurement are different, the systems too. So it is very useful to understand more about how heat pumps work, what the costs are, any inconveniences, and benefits. Seeing a system in action may help others appreciate and understand the process and change.

Installing the system

In 2010 we converted our house back to a family home from 2 flats (1960s division). We installed insulation throughout to the internal walls, under floor, between floors and in the loft and fitted oversized radiators then. New windows, electrics and plumbing were installed also. In 2014 our boiler was 14 years old so towards its end of reliable life and we decided to opt into the government grant while it was still available.

Living with a heat pump

It’s great, very economic and easy to use. Costing less than gas to keep the house at 21 or 22 degrees and 19 overnight. We heat water on Intelligent Go cheap rate (7p kWh) which the heat pump qualifies us for. We take full advantage with EV charging, appliances, house batteries. Hot water storage (works out at 2p p kWh of heat) means we consider how as a family we use hot water so we don’t need to top up using daytime tariff.
We have 14 solar panels for solar power. Our log stove is very rarely used now because the heat pump works well heating the whole  house to a cosy temperature.
