We believe that the transition to low carbon is far too slow, so although we may not generally be "early adopters" we wanted to do what we could to play our part. Our gas boiler was over 10 years old and we didn’t want to find ourselves in a position where our boiler needed replacement and due to time pressures we had to replace with another gas boiler. Therefore, we started planning for a heat pump install quite a while ago. Some friends had a heat pump which helped us in deciding how we would go about the change. So, now we are keen to help anyone else that might be thinking of the change to accomplish it.

Installing the system

The install took about a week. As part of the install we had the installer, Octopus Energy, remove all gas piping and the gas meter which they did foc as part of the overall install. For a few years before we undertook various work to improve the insulation in the property in anticipation of having a heat pump fitted.

Living with a heat pump

It's been fine. It is a more complex system compared to a conventional gas boiler and doesn't operate in the same way. ie. a gas boiler is a simple on/off whereas a heat pump is more nuanced in operation. Just takes a bit of getting used to how the system works.
