Daikin air source heat pump in a post 2003 property

We are both retired, I was a chartered mechanical engineer and my wife was a secondary school science teacher. We feel very strongly about the climate emergency and have tried to minimise our carbon footprint. We drive an electric vehicle and walk and cycle as much as we can. We have done as much as we can to minimise heat loss from our house and have an A rated EPC.

Installing the system

Our heat pump installation required 9 new radiators as the existing ones were already undersized for our previous gas boiler. Installation was very intense with Octopus staff on site for 4 days but they were superb and professional. We had no heating or hot water for two days but we managed.

Living with a heat pump

We use an Octopus agile tariff and charge our battery bank from the mains normally during the night depending on price. This is sufficient to run the heat pump during the day without buying electricity when it is expensive. It works out at about 12-18 p/Kwh. We only had the system installed during the last week of December 24 so have only experienced its performance during the very cold weather. It has performed very well and the house is warmer than it was with our gas boiler.
