Daikin air source heat pump in a pre 1920 property

Brendan

About me
We needed a new heating system and did a lot of investigation before hand, the BUS grant and smart tariffs have made it cost effective. We have joined the open house as we want to show that is does work in old, mid terrace, homes and share our experience. Happy to be contacted rather than setting up event days

About this property

Cardiff, CF23

4 bedrooms

Air source heat pump

EPC rating: C

Installing the system

Mid terrace, 150m2, 1906 family home in a Conservation area of Cardiff
Recently moved in and doing a complete needed retrofit
500mm attic insulation, 150mm suspended floor insulation. Double and triple glazing at rear of house, original sash windows and door at the front of the house, insulating lime render on internal exterior facing walls.
We had a 24 yr old undersized boiler when we moved in and needed to remodel the kitchen. Took the opportunity to install an Air Source Heat Pump after lots of investigation on options.
Have a 11kw Daikin Altherma 3, 300lt Hot Water tank, 50lt header tank and Under Floor Heating downstairs.
7 radiators, 6 upstairs, 1 in hallway, using original 15mm pipework all double panel.

Living with a heat pump

We have just gone through our first winter and its been amazing, performing better than expected. A constant heat of 20C, on the Octopus Cosy tariff, flip to Agile in the summer as heating is off.
System is set to weather dependant, 38C at -2C (designed 50C at -2C) HW temp of 42C and we were encouraged to tweak/use the system by the installers to optimise.
Don't know the SCOP, but we're paying less than 2023/24 winter combined bill.
Gas meter removed, fully electric house
