Daikin air source heat pump in a 1920 - 1944 property

Steve

We wanted to move away from gas completely for environmental reasons, both for our carbon output but also from a clean air perspective. We have an induction hob and have capped the gas off. It feels really positive and we have enjoyed the project. We would encourage other people to consider doing the same and feel sharing our experience would help.

Installing the system

We live in a 1941 semi which had a fairly new gas combi boiler and some recently updated radiators. We had been thinking about a heat pump for a couple of years and decided to go for it after some alterations to our kitchen. Getting an Energy Performance Certificate (EPC) was the first step and then we had a survey by our installer (Octopus) who then provided a detailed plan and a quote. After that we waited a few months before the install team arrived. It took 5 days and was fairly disruptive but no more than getting any other significant project done on your house. We did some additional work to hide the water tank and pipework in a cupboard and it all looks very neat and tidy now. Our installation was fairly straightforward as the pump sits on the drive down the side of the house and the tank is in the kitchen on the other side of the wall. We had all but 2 of our radiators replaced. We used the £7,500 government grant which kept the cost for us down and it feels like good value.

Living with a heat pump

Its great. Once you get used to having it on all the time with a low heat setting at night and then 3-4 degrees higher during the time that we are in the house then it is very comfortable. You can't really give it a quick boost like you do with a gas boiler but you soon realise that is not necessary when you have a lovely constant temperature. We were a bit worried about hot water temperature and capacity moving from a combi boiler but in fact there is plenty and you can easily run a bath and still have hot water for washing up etc. The controls are easy to use and it's really convenient to use the app and program in schedules.
