Daikin air source heat pump in a 1920 - 1944 property

Robert

We are a retired couple in our 60's and 70's. We were motivated to do something helpful for the climate, and out local environment, and to improve on the system we had in the house. We have a grandchild to entertain, who occasionaly stays with us.

Installing the system

We have a two story terraced house built in 1937, with single skin walls, and a loft conversion. We were informed that the installation would take 5 days, and that was correct. Over Monday to Friday. There was a previous visit from a team to establish the feasability of installing and ASHP, as part of the process of using a grant. There followed an inspection by an engineeer to establish what work needed to be done, and the installation followed quite soon after. The details of the installation included replacing some of our existing radiators, including the radiators in our loft. All of our windows are double glazed, some more recently than others. We have added "secondary double glazing" throughout the house, which effectively means that we have triple glazing. To assist with ventilation, when the insulation was fitted, we were also fitted with several air extraction fans. We had insulation (110mm of a rockwool type of material) to the house front and back, but not for our loft conversion, which was built in 2014, and so already had some insulation. We have had our house surveyed with heat sensitive infra red camera's twice and this has identified areas that needed sealing etc. Our motivation was principally to cut down our carbon "footprint". At the same time as the ASHP was installed, we also installed an Induction Hob in our kitchen, so we are completely gas free.

Living with a heat pump

The ASHP was installed recently, but so far it has worked out well. The pump itself is very quiet. We now have abundant hot water available during the day, which we did not have when were a using gas boiler, which took a while to heat the water and send it through the house. The house remains warm throughout the day. The system works at a steady 20 degrees. We have not needed to turn the heat up.
