Daikin air source heat pump in a 1983 - 2002 property

John

I’ve always invested in energy efficient technologies to save money, solar panels in August 2022 and more recently an ASHP in February 2025. I’ll be expanding my solar array with the aim of achieving net zero for the heating and lighting of my home. My energy payments (£94pm), including charging my electric car (Purchased March 2023), haven’t gone up since the solar array installation which represents substantial savings. One of my neighbours pays £240 per month as a comparison.

Installing the system

The heat pump was installed in February 2025.
The installation started on the Monday morning and was completed mid-morning on the Friday. The installation team were friendly and very professional and gave me an update at the end of each day. They had numerous questions about the existing installation and discussed the options open to me (e.g. Thermostat location) and gained consent as it was needed.

After the £7.5k grant, the heat pump installation cost about £500 more than installing a new gas boiler. We also had 5 radiators upgraded with new thermostatic radiator valves for optimal heating efficiency.

Hitting Net Zero

In August 2022 I had a 12 panel PV system installed with a 9.5.KW battery and the savings are mounting up. I’m in the process of adding another 12 panels with an upgraded inverter to handle the addition power that I’ll be generating.

Rate Selection

There are several options available focused on EV charging, ASHP and export on the market

I chose, after modelling the various options, ‘Intelligent Octopus Flux’ as this gave me the best export rate (22.84p to 30.43p off-peak/peak) and on this rate I’m expecting a return on investment rate of 13-14% annually).

Living with a heat pump

It's great. House kept at about 20C all the time throughout winter. We heat all rooms now rather than keeping rarely used rooms unheated. It makes living in the house more comfortable and it is also the most efficient way to use the heat pump as recommended by the installation team.

So far running costs are comparable to a gas combi-boiler, my gas meter has been capped so I don’t pay the gas standing charge anymore. I expect my payments to be reduced substantially with the expansion of my PV system

To get a heat pump and/or solar quote with Octopus  please follow the link https://tech.referrals.octopus.energy/unQlNuPM  which gives you a £100 credit, if you decide to go ahead with the heat pump or solar install
