Grant air source heat pump in a pre 1920 property

Andrew

We are both retired and live at home most of the time. We are keen on energy efficiency and keeping our running costs down. We also drive EVs and have solar panels and house batteries.

Installing the system

We investigated installing a ASHP some 6 years ago to replace our expensive-to-run LPG boiler. We contacted Greener Energy Group who carried out a thorough survey before recommending our current setup. For our traditional stone cottage in NE Scotland they specified a 13kW ASHP, new hot water tank and new radiators. It took 2 days to install with larger underfloor pipework and more efficient radiators. The savings were immediate halving our annual costs.

Living with a heat pump

The cottage is easily heated allowing a constant comfortable temperature. Daily costs are generally low but do increase when the outside temperatures drops below 5C as the ASHP heat exchangers do ice up (like a freezer) and the automatic defrost kicks in. Noise levels are very low and barely noticeable.

Getting the right tariff is key to keeping your costs down. We are on an EV tariff with Octopus Energy (Intelligent Octopus Go) giving low (7p/kW) overnight between 2330 and 0530. This allows us the charge our EVs and the house batteries. The cottage and ASHP draw from the batteries during the day resulting in 90-100% off peak usage throughout the year. Other tariffs are available.

Visiting my heat pump: Moved from LPG to Air Sourced Heat Pump for our traditional stone cottage. Best decision and saved money.
