Daikin air source heat pump in a 1965 - 1982 property

Simon

I'm passionate about the transition to net zero and reducing dependence on fossil fuels so got an EV in 2022, had a 5.8kw solar system installed with a 9.5kwh battery and the heat pump was the final step to ditching fossil fuels (I also had to replace my gas cooker with an induction cooker so the gas could be capped, so I no longer pay gas standing charges).

Installing the system

  • 1960's detached, EPC 'E' rating when purchased in 2016, now an EPC 'B' rating
  • Insulated loft, cavity walls, external walls behind cladding
  • All radiators replaced with newer larger radiators to accommodate lower temperatures
  • Old dirty loft tanks removed and hot water cylinder replaced with a much more efficient one
  • Primary 28mm pipework routed externally and through the loft to minimise disruption (instead of pulling up floorboards as the old boiler 22mm pipework went across the void above the kitchen ceiling to the airing cupboard)
  • Wall mounted 9kw Daikin
  • Installed EmonCMS monitoring (and data is on Heat Pump Monitor): https://emoncms.org/app/view?name=DaikinAltherma&readkey=c4bd01fbb69f2750e3c30bcf935e1163
  • Requested Octopus install the smaller 8kw unit as the heat pump monitoring shows actual heat loss is less than the Octopus survey determined
  • Installed a solid base to move off the wall to floor mount instead (quieter)

Living with a heat pump

The technology is fantastic, especially combined with solar and a house battery. My cost per kWh was 8.8p from 15th January - 14th February. The house is very comfortable all the time running lower flow temperatures vs gas heating. As my heat pump is oversized (the 9kw Daikin is the smallest 'high capacity' unit Daikin sell, which is actually a software limited 16kw Daikin) the house would easily overheat and the thermostat wasn't reliable, so I use Home Assistant to turn off the heating when the current temperature exceeds the set point. I've requested a smaller 8kw Daikin which is their 'low capacity' unit which I expect to be far more efficient and quieter. The 9kw is very quiet most of the time but when it's several degrees below zero it is noisier as it does more defrost cycles however you can live with it but as I'm sensitive to noise I'm going to move it off the wall and ground mount it which will be quieter.
