Vaillant air source heat pump in a post 2003 property

Dan

I’m a self builder, architect and low energy enthusiast. I want to share my experiences and knowledge gained to help others make informed decisions about what technologies and systems are right for them, and their specific circumstances (lifestyle, budget, house type, position and insulation), and maybe help with some of the myths about green tech!

Installing the system

We’re lucky to be in a low energy, well insulated new build house. We’ve been adjusting the systems we have (ASHP, PV, battery, EV charger) since we moved in to be as efficient and cost effective as possible. The systems we have can easily be replicated either as a whole or just as individual parts, and I’d be happy to share our experiences with each and what combinations of technologies might work best for you.

Living with a heat pump

It initially took a bit of getting used to in that it’s not ‘on demand’ like a gas boiler. We played with the hot water storage scheduling based on our weekly usage, and can always boost this via the ASHP app when we have visitors. Heating is low and constant, gone are the days of piping hot radiators, but to be honest it’s a much more stable and pleasant temperature. Our running costs (excluding PV generation) are around £1 per day for all heating and hot water.

Visiting my heat pump: Our ASHP costs us around 2p a day to do our daily hot water need, and our heating is very stable, please feel free to message questions

Message Dan if you want to ask them something about their heat pump or the process of getting one installed. Click request a visit above if you want to arrange a visit.
