Samsung air source heat pump in a pre 1920 property

Megan

I work in climate communications and live with my partner and two young children. I know heat pumps are essential to decarbonise home heating and reduce our dependence on imported gas - and that there are practical challenges to rolling them out. By sharing our experience I hope to demystify the process and help others to make informed decisions.

Installing the system

We decided to get a heat pump installed as part of a rear extension project. This allowed us to design in space for the hot water tank and run pipes and wires under the floor while it was being laid. The old radiators in the house needed an upgrade anyway and we got underfloor heating in the extension. Annoyingly, we found out after they started that the heating pipes were undersized and there was some additional cost to addressing that. The heat pump was installed in two stages and then it took a few months to fully commission the heating system because of other work that needed to happen first. While there were some hiccups getting the installer and builder to talk to each other, it made sense to incorporate a heat pump into our building project.

Living with a heat pump

It's great! Our home is consistently warmer and energy bills lower. We use a heat pump tariff and set the thermostat so the heating mostly runs during cheaper windows. After figuring out the controls, we have plenty of hot water. I'm delighted not to burn fossil fuels at home any more.
