Daikin air source heat pump in a 1983 - 2002 property

Jacky

We decided to install a heat pump to make our home more energy-efficient and reduce our carbon footprint while maintaining year-round comfort. We're hoping that by sharing our experience we can help others learn about the benefits of this sustainable heating solution.

Installing the system

When comparing the costs of replacing our broken boiler, the opportunity to receive a £7,500 Government grant made exploring a heat pump an easy and logical choice. Rather than reinstalling a system that could be more harmful to the environment, we embraced this sustainable heating and hot water solution for the future.
Having lived in our home for over 20 years, we needed to obtain an EPC certificatec -a process that was surprisingly straightforward and financially supported by Octopus. Before certification, we also increased our loft insulation to 200mm, which positively impacted our final EPC score.
The heat pump installation took just a week, with Octopus handling everything seamlessly. Their dedicated team, led by Craig and supported by two plumbers and an electrician, worked efficiently and professionally. Every member of the team was trustworthy, polite, and conscientious, keeping us informed at each stage. With new radiators installed in every room, they went above and beyond to make the experience as stress-free as possible.
The end result was fantastic, with minimal disruption and a spotless finish as they cleaned up meticulously along the way.

Living with a heat pump

The transition from a gas boiler to a heat pump has been seamless, and we couldn’t be happier with the results. We’re already noticing significant savings, as the energy input-to-heat output ratio is three times more efficient than our previous system.
The app is simple to use and primarily serves as a helpful tool to monitor the heat pump’s efficiency. The Cosy 6 heat pump itself is compact and visually unobtrusive, blending well into its surroundings while operating with minimal noise. Although the plumbing work during installation was extensive, it has been neatly concealed with boxing.
Having a consistent, comfortable temperature in every room - rather than heating from cold during a cold spell - has been an easy and welcome adjustment. Water pressure is excellent, and by heating our water during the cheapest tariff periods, we always have instant hot water at the turn of a tap.
