Daikin air source heat pump in a 1965 - 1982 property

About me
I work in energy and my wife is a teacher and we have two little ones. We installed a heat pump when we moved into the house, as we knew the gas boiler needed to go someday. Easiest to do it while you're decorating!

Air source heat pump

Installed by Carbon Rewind

Installing the system

We have installed an air source heat pump feeding our previous wet radiator heating system, as well as a roof full of solar panels, which last year exported more electricity over the year than we use, which I reckon is good enough for net zero.

It's by no means a grand design, so demonstrates how you can get your house to net zero without needing to be an architect, a limitless budget, or to move out. Apart from a heat pump and a rainbow bike shed it looks just like the neighbouring houses. The only insulation change we've made is topping up the loft insulation, which was inadequate when we moved in.

Living with a heat pump

There were a few teething problems getting it all set-up, as we were one of the first heat pumps this company put in, but once that was all resolved it's worked brilliantly. I really like the controls, there's lots of flexibility and an app too. This allows you to set weather compensation, which ensures that the balance between comfort and efficiency is at it's best.
The most striking thing initially was just how quiet it is. I knew the noise claims were overblown, but when they were testing it I couldn't tell when it was on from the room above the unit with the window open (and I was listening hard).
I work as an analyst for Parity Projects, supporting local authorities to retrofit homes, and providing the data analysis behind Ecofurb, which offers household retrofit advice and support.

Accessing the venue

Parking is always a mess around us, but plenty of room for bikes. Best to head for the back entrance (the rainbow shed), which is on Sackville Close.
