Installing the system

This host hasn't added a description of installing their system.

Living with a heat pump

Our home is a 1970s build with several extensions having been added over time. An extra living room/bedroom added to the back in the 1980s and the attached garage converted to a granny annexe in the 2000s.

When we bought the place there were two separate heating systems, combi boilers in both the main house and the annexe.

We decided to get an ASHP before the birth of our first child as we were worried about the disruption it would cause getting the ASHP whilst having a small child. During the installation the entire house was converted to one system heated by a single ASHP.  We also decided to treat ourselves to underfloor heating to the living room. The install also included adding a hot water cylinder and extra pipes and pumps and extra tanks, all of which were installed in the cupboard under the stairs.

Total cost for the installation was a proximately £21k of which £3k was for the underfloor. The actual cost to us was £16k as we got the old-style £5k BUS grant. We used the local Lendology social lending service to get a loan for the rest (which works at about £250 a month in repayments, over 7 years). I would say our install was at the upper end of the price range as we focused on getting a good efficiency from our system, which meant swapping out most of the radiators, adding in several new ones and putting in the underfloor. It could have definitely have been done for less!

Regarding energy efficiency the house has insulated cavity walls (of unknown quality, it was done before we bought the place) and 300mm Rockwool in the loft. We put 100mm of PIR in the roof of the living room extension and added underfloor heating to the living room as it's the most important space in the house and wanted it to be comfortable and warm. Prior to the heat pump being installed we had the C.H.E.E.S.E. Project come round and do a heat loss survey, which helped a huge amount in picking up little issues we had with insulation and drafts. Could not recommend them enough!

Very happy to show people round and talk through the system and the experience with the installation. I am an engineer myself so can go into some technical detail for the systems and installation for anyone interested.
