I am a Chartered Engineer and Physicist and have knowledge of green technologies and heat pumps. I was aware our house was only 5 years old and well insulated. We had room for the heat pump and the replacement water tank. Was keen to significantly reduce our carbon footprint and potentially reduce running costs. The boiler replacement scheme comes under the MCS scheme which helps ensure a good design and installation with audited and accredited installers. With the grant we could install a new system with good warranties for very low cost.

Installing the system

Ran gas boiler with flow temperature of 50C in winter as a trial and found no problems before had heat pump installed last. Octopus did a thorough survey. Proposal to fit Daikin pump, replace existing hot water cylinder and increase size of two radiators. Cost to me £400 after £7500 grant. Pre-install visit and delivery of equipment to my garage. Installation took 2.5 days by two plumbers and an electrician.

Living with a heat pump

Has worked well. I now have a detailed understanding of how to optimise efficiency for both hot water and heating. In process of integrating this knowledge with Cosy tariff to help reduce the running cost. Had gas hob and gas meter removed. Had an electrician install 32A supply to kitchen so I could install an induction hob.
