Air source heat pump
Installed by Octopus Energy
Cost of energy bills per year: ~£50
Installing the system
- Daikin air source heat pump (EDLA04E2V3) and hot water tank (EKHWSU150D3V3)
- Installed June 2023 by Octopus Energy
- I was told it would take 4 days - it actually took 5.
- Great installation team - up to 6 people on site (and up to 5 vans parked in the road!)
- Replaced a 17-year old gas combi boiler
- No planning permission required providing, following a noise assessment, the trellis sections of the nearest two fence panels were replaced with solid sections. I think this was unnecessary because the heat pump is so quiet there is no danger of my neighbours ever hearing it.
- Octopus Energy removed the gas boiler and gas meter so I don't have to pay the gas standing charge.
- They replaced two radiators with thicker radiators and installed one new radiator in the kitchen.
- I was without hot water for one night.
- I had to separately pay £800 for a roofing company to remove the gas boiler flue from the roof. It was difficult to find a roofing company interested in such a 'small' job.
Living with a heat pump
- The house is warmer, more consistently warm and warm throughout the house.
- The house was warm during the coldest snaps of the 2023/24 winter.
- The system is quieter than my old gas boiler.
- The heat pump takes longer to heat the house than the gas boiler did.
I need to start the heating earlier in the morning which makes it difficult to judge bedroom radiator settings - I don’t want my bedroom to get too warm while I’m still sleeping. - I have never been short of hot water for a shower. I once was short of hot water for a bath - I think I just needed to adjust the schedule.
- The heat pump system cost more than a new gas combi boiler.
- I’m not able to say my bills are lower as there are too many variables involved. However, my gut feeling is that bills would be slightly lower if I were comparing like with like.
- The real savings have come by combining a heat pump with 18 solar panels, a 9.5 kWh home battery, the Octopus Energy Agile import tariff / Outgoing export tariff and a home assistant predbat automation system. With that combination, I believe my net electricity bill will be about £50 this year.
- Ongoing heat pump maintenance is reasonably priced: I pay £9/month to Octopus Energy for a service plan that includes an annual service.
