My ancient gas boiler failed terminally in late December 2021. The easy option would have been to replace it with a combi gas boiler, but I wanted to get away from using gas. The heat pump situation was not at all clear at that time, so I took the low capital cost option of installing DIY infrared heating panels. These work well, but the running cost is high. In August last year, I contacted British Gas about their ASHP offer, but they declined to quote as I did not have an up to date EPC. I could not get a sensible quote from OVO, my then energy supplier. Then I learned that modern air conditioning units will work efficiently in both directions, heating as well as cooling. I tried a number of aircon installers, but being out in W Cumbria, it was difficult to get a range of quotations. I finally settled on Penguin Air Conditioning of Cockermouth. From first contact in early September to installation in early November 2023, the process was easy. Cost £2000 to supply and install, time for two men 5 hours on one day with minimal disruption. The indoor unit is in my living room, from which the warm air will circulate throughout the house, upstairs as well as downstairs. I have kept the infrared heating as backup, but don't need it to operate at the same time as the aircon. I have been kept very warm this past winter.  On Cosy Octopus tariff, my electricity direct debit is roughly on a par with what I was paying for gas and electricity, back in 2020.

Hot water is supplied from a Triton Instaflow 15 litre stored water heater, controlled by a smart socket to  heat only when required, as my need for hot water is minimal.
